Facades and Non-Sites

by Marlene Hausegger

For my last soloshow I explored that juncture where public and private realms meet, collide, and occasionally sprawl into each other. Using photography, collages, video and interventions I raise the question as to the tyranny of ubiquitous administration and utilization of space. I am fascinated by those interzones that are as yet not registered or have already been given up again. Those “non-sites” that prove useless in the sense of the capitalist logic of accumulation but, precisely because they have fallen into oblivion, light up like a magic parallel universe far away from the crowded and busy areas. Such places are Vienna´s Jonasreindl, the former Frachtenbahnhof or Rome´s Cinecittà.
