Recent Studies

by Marc-Alexandre Dumoulin

Situated between ready-made and reenactment, my new project is an exercise in reduction. I perform a progressive effacement of an artwork to uncover its essence. For example: painting in a baroque manner, I simultaneously re-create and strip the canvas of its subject, leaving only the sky “à la Tiepolo” to convey emotionality and divine sublime. In another instance, I recreate with pencils the opulence of the “Stucco Lustro” technique on minimalist slabs of plaster in an attempt to understand the line between creativity, drama and replica. These new works are a study on the essence of artistry; an effort in unveiling the moment at which an object stop being inert and enter the spirited realm of the arts. The elusiveness of the idea also raises questions on fetishism, animism and their continuous correlation to the arts.
