Alice Shintani

My homeland, Brazil, has a huge diversity of cultures and identities, but a violent inequality in all aspects of life determines us since colonial times. Such forms of violence left active scars on our collective body ́s memory, starting with deep-rooted class and racial prejudices. I believe the aesthetic experience of the world could dislocate somehow such repressed colonial unconscious that roots our present, as it induces the ability of our body to become vulnerable to what and who surround us, to let ourselves be taken over by the sensation of disparity between the forms of reality and the movements that fluctuate underneath its apparent stability.

Since 2003, I have been working from an expanded idea on painting to imagine forms of approaching to the emancipated other and to reflect on possibilities of the aesthetic experience today: where, whom and how it can be shared in order to dislocate something. Defending the idea that such experience exists beyond the established art system, I have been transiting between different contexts, interested in diminishing the distances and meanings between poetic and political gestures.
