Call for applications

Hangar Barcelona in association with Curators' Network is offeringtwo fully funded one-month-residencies in Barcelona, Spain, that will take place from November 11, 2015 - December 10, 2015 and from January 8, 2016 - February 11, 2016.

The call is free of charge and open to all curators and researchers who currently do not live and work in Catalonia. Deadline for the submission of applications is September 20, 2015, midnight, Spanish time, CEST time zone.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with the artist residents at Hangar Barcelona and to research the wider artistic context of Barcelona and Catalonia as well as to establish networks and dialogues with other local and international cultural agents.

Applicants should thoroughly research about Hangar and Curators' Network and submit a proposal that outlines their plans for the residency at Hangar.

The selected candidates are expected to work during their residency with the project that they have presented to this call and that should include at least four of the current artist residents of Hangar.

Eligibility

The call is open for all cultural agents who as part of their praxis habitually work with artists, be it from a free-lance or institutional perspective (curators, researchers, art writers, ...).

There is no age limit.

Applicants should currently not reside in Catalonia.

Only one application per person or collective permitted.  Curatorial collectives have to assign one member to be the resident.

The call seeks especially for participants who work with a high level of excellence, but do not yet have a consolidated international career, as one of the primary goals of Curators’ Network is to promote art-professionals who are still not well known in a larger international context.

Applying agents should have at least a moderate level of spoken English, Catalan or Spanish, and should feel comfortable engaging in artistic discussions in one of these three languages.

Submitted projects should include a working proposal a group of at least four artist who are currently residents at Hangar. The projects can be both motivated by an already existing research strand of the candidates or can be articulated for this specific purpose. Each of the four chosen artists will receive a specific production budget of 425 € for the purpose of the proposed project.

The two successful applicants will be asked to present the results of their residency at the end of their stay at Hangar as well as in an online format.

The two successful applicants will also be required to provide a final report of the residency and to seek opportunities to share their experience with their own local communities which they should report back to Curators' Network and Hangar.

Applicants should indicate if they are available during both or only one of the timeframes of the residency: November 11, 2015- December 10, 2015, or  January 8, 2016 - February 11, 2016.

Terms of the residency

Hangar will provide the following for each residency:

  • In and outbound travel (up to 300 €)
  • Honoraries (1250 € before taxes)
  • Accommodation (own bedroom in a four-room house located at Hangar residency space)
  • A working space and internet connection (Please bring your own laptop as no computer will be provided)
  • A production budget of 425 € per artist (1700 € overall) which will be collectively defined among resident, artists and Hangar production team.
  • Technical assistance of the activities that the candidates will undertake during their residency

Curators' Network will provide the following:

  • the two succesful candidates will get a permanent profile and presentation space at www.curators-network.eu
  • the online presentation of the projects of the residents will be hosted and promoted through www.curators-network.eu 

The successful candidates are required to arrange for their own visa and insurance in advance.

  • A CV
  • A maximum of 10 examples of recent projects, with images, captions and a short description if necessary. You may include links to project websites and videos documenting the projects.
  • Any other documentation that you consider relevant (e.g. articles or other publications that have been written about you or by yourself)

A project description (no template provided, please create your own document)

  • The selected candidates are expected to realize during their residency the project that they have presented to this call and that should include at least four of the current artist residents of Hangar. The pdf therefore should include a description of the project, its relation to the proposed group of artists as well as related images, videos and texts if necessary.
  • One of the objectives of Curators' Network is to explore new forms of presentation and dissemination of contemporary art, especially those involving the creation of new digital content. Applicants should therefore foresee within their project description the possibility to present their research in an online - as well as in an offline context.

Whereas the form has to be filled out obligatorily in English, the additional documents can also be submitted in Spanish. Although taking in mind the international jury, we strongly recommend to submit an English version.

Dates, deadlines, procedure

  • Deadline: Applications should be submitted online no later than Monday 20th September 2015 at Midnight [Spain, CEST].
  • Jury: The resident will be chosen on the basis of the submitted applications. The jury will be composed of Curators' Network council (Sören Meschede (hablarenarte:, Spain), Borbála Szalai (independent curator, Hungary), Anca Verona Mihulet (independent curator, Romania) and Jürgen Tabor (Galerie im Taxispalais, Austria)) and the programme committee of Hangar.
  • Notification: The successful applicants will be notified latest by Thursday 1st of October 2015.

Hangar is a centre for art research and production located in Barcelona, Spain. Hangar’s mission is to support visual artists and other cultural agents during the different moments of their art production processes as well as to contribute to the best development of their projects. Hangar facilitates equipment, facilities, production assistance and a suitable context for free experimentation and knowledge transfer. Hangar is located in the Poblenou neighborhood in Barcelona and in a mid 19th Century that was originally designed for the textile industry. At present, and after the centre was extended to the adjacent warehouses, the buildings used by Hangar cover a total surface of 2,600 m2.
